From SIOP Past-President Gary Latham
Every year the SIOP conference gets better, and this year proves my point.
For the first time in the history of SIOP, the President of APA will address us. Come hear James Bray speak at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 4, in the Sheraton New Orleans Grand Ballroom A.
Peter Gollwitzer, the eminent social psychologist at NYU, will present his empirical—yes empirical—research on implementation intentions and subconscious goals Friday at 10:30 a.m.Who among us would have predicted 50, 15, or even five years ago this subject would be a keynote at a SIOP conference?
My overarching goal for SIOP is to increase our visibility/impact with the public. One specific goal is to embrace evidence-based management, and to become the supplier of evidence-based management to SHRM's 250,000 members. Hence the Thursday Theme Track is evidence-based management, chaired by the founder of the movement, Denise Rousseau. The closing speaker at 5 p.m. Thursday is Lon O'Neil, the CEO of SHRM. With him will be Deb Cohen, the Chief Knowledge Officer for SHRM and SIOP's Chair of Professional Practice.
The theme track on Saturday is Social Responsibility. The lead off speaker is Ingar Skaugg, the Chair of the Center for Creative Leadership and the CEO in Norway of the largest global shipping company in the world.
Our closing speaker on saturday is not only dynamic, he is timely. He is Steve Kerr, formerly an academic at Ohio State and University of Southern California who was wooed away by Jack Welch and is now at Goldman Sachs, one of the few financial institutions not involved in scandal. Wayne Cascio delivered a speech at SHRM recently explaining that the reasons are due largely to Steve's heavy influence in the organization
To increase I/O psychology's influence globally we are creating a formal alliance with EAWOP and Division 1 of IAAP. There will be a signing ceremony at our plenary session Thursday morning. Our three organizations will be issuing white papers on issues of global concern (eg, an aging workforce) to public agencies (eg. the United Nations). John Scott is our first representative to the United Nations. Give us your input Friday, 1230-2pm
In closing, I want to tell you how proud I am to have had the honor of serving you in the role of President. We had an amazingly effective Executive Board that enabled us to set and attain specific high goals. I will explain in greater detail in my presidential address to you thursday morning at the plenary session. See you there
